Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world and cataracts is the first. Glaucoma is often referred to as the “sneak thief of sight” as the loss of visual field is often slow and over a long period of time; because of this, it is often unfortunately only noticed when it is already at quite an advanced stage. For this reason, it is always important to regularly have eye examinations and especially a ‘contrast sensitivity test’ and a field test to measure any visual loss or impairment.

In the early stages there may be no noticeable symptoms at all, so it is extremely important to have regular eye checkups to diagnose the disease as early as possible. As the nerve cell layer is affected by glaucoma poor peripheral vision is quite often seen and there is also often a deterioration or loss of sensitivity to contrast.

Glaucoma consists of a group of diseases attacking the optic nerve and involves a loss of retinal ganglion cells in the characteristic pattern of optic neuropathy. Elevated intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma; 14mmHg is normal and an elevated reading above 22mmHg signifies there is a problem. Some people can develop nerve damage at a relatively low pressure whereas someone else may have elevated eye pressure for years but still never actually develop any damage at all. If left untreated, glaucoma will eventually lead to permanent damage of the optic nerve which will resultant in a loss of visual field, and this can eventually lead to complete blindness. Once it has been lost, it is very hard to recover the damaged visual field again. One in two hundred people aged fifty and under are affected by glaucoma and one in ten people eighty years and over. This is why it is so important to have regular eye examinations as already stated above.

Ethos NAC eye drops for glaucoma contain the ingredient N-Acetyl-Carnosine (NAC for short) which has the unique ability to rejuvenate cells and repair damage naturally utilising the body’s own repair mechanisms. NAC is naturally occurring in all our bodies so is 100% natural and safe, but these natural resources within our bodies depletes with age; about 10% per year after the age of 30. By applying the drops regularly throughout the day, they go to work repairing the damage and reducing the elevated intraocular pressure back to normal once again.

There are two main categories of glaucoma which are ‘open angle’ called chronic glaucoma and ‘closed angle’ called acute glaucoma. Closed angle acute glaucoma usually appears suddenly and quite often is accompanied by painful side effects so it is usually relatively quickly diagnosed, although loss of vision and damage can also very quickly occur as well. Open angle chronic glaucoma usually progresses much slower and consequently the patient may not even be aware of it until it has already quite significantly progressed.
